Lt Col (Retd) Philip Holmes OBE MSc: Transforming Lives in Nepal with Pipal Tree Charity

In January 2015, Lt Col (Retd) Philip Holmes OBE MSc founded Pipal Tree charity, launching a transformative initiative from his home in Devon. With the unwavering support of his wife, Bev, Philip has significantly impacted the lives of many in Nepal. His story is one of inspiration, demonstrating that individual efforts, no matter how small, can lead to monumental change when amplified by collective support and serendipitous opportunities.

The Vision Behind Pipal Tree

Philip’s ethos is simple yet powerful: do not be daunted by the magnitude of a challenge to the extent of inaction. His belief in starting small and being open to collaborative growth has been the cornerstone of Pipal Tree’s mission.

Why Pipal Tree?

The Pipal Tree, native to South Asia, holds deep cultural significance in Nepal. Revered by both Hindus and Buddhists, it often stands at the heart of Nepalese towns and villages, serving as a communal gathering point. This symbolism of community and connection perfectly encapsulates Pipal Tree’s engagement and reforestation programs. Additionally, the tree’s distinctive leaves inspire the artistry at Lily's Leaves silver jewellery workshop in Kathmandu.

Transforming Marginalised Communities

Pipal Tree is dedicated to transforming marginalised rural communities in Nepal. By improving access to education and skills, especially for girls and women, and addressing the climate crisis, the charity aims to create sustainable and lasting change. The charity’s efforts include:

  • Planting Strategic Forests: These forests serve as flood barriers and support disaster preparedness.
  • Ecosystem Rewilding: This initiative promotes rapid social change, helping communities lift themselves out of poverty and social exclusion, fostering long-term flourishing.

Empowering Local Leaders

In the face of Nepal’s numerous challenges, Pipal Tree identifies and collaborates with local leaders who possess the drive and passion to address environmental and social issues. Two such leaders are Lily Katuwal KC, founder of social enterprise 'Lily's Leaves,' and Dev Narayan Mandal, founder of 'The Mithila Wildlife Trust.' These dynamic entrepreneurs implement Pipal Tree’s projects on the ground, supported by the tools and funds provided by the charity. Their friendship and shared vision for a better Nepal underpin their collaborative efforts.

Responding to Natural Disasters

Pipal Tree stands ready to assist vulnerable populations during natural disasters, including those exacerbated by climate change, such as floods. By building an emergency relief fund, the charity ensures it can respond promptly to save lives. Concurrently, Pipal Tree works to help displaced communities become more resilient against future crises.

Their Work

Climate and Livelihoods

Pipal Tree is committed to aiding vulnerable individuals during natural disasters, building an emergency relief fund to provide immediate, life-saving responses. The charity also focuses on helping displaced communities better protect themselves and withstand future crises.

Rewilding and Reforestation

Amidst Nepal's severe wildfire crises, Pipal Tree is planting trees that grow ten times faster than normal by pioneering the 'Miyawaki Method' of rapid reforestation. This method is combined with rewilding efforts to restore exhausted farmlands in the south and transform neglected urban spaces in Kathmandu into vibrant urban forests.

Schools and Skills

Pipal Tree supports children, particularly girls from the 'untouchable' community in South Nepal, to attend schools through the innovative 'Community Learning Centre' model. Additionally, the Lily's Leaves training centre in Kathmandu empowers vulnerable young women, including deaf women, by teaching them skills that lead to employment and entrepreneurial opportunities.

Pipal Tree’s journey is a testament to the power of community, resilience, and the belief that small beginnings can lead to significant impact. You can hear more e about this inspiring charity in the TedX talk by Philip Holmes https://youtu.be/M9QCn0LKMqE.
