Rotary Dragon Boat festival 2024 supports Cancer Charity

The much-anticipated annual Rotary Dragon Boat Festival, organised by the Bristol Breakfast Rotary Club, is set to make waves once again as it returns for its 20th consecutive year. The event, which has become a beloved tradition in the city, will take place on Sunday, June 16th, at Baltic Wharf on the Bristol City Harbourside.

Bristol Breakfast Rotary Club, renowned for its commitment to community service, has been at the helm of the Dragon Boat Festival since its inception, raising an astounding £830,000 over the years. This year's festival aims to continue the legacy of fun-filled competition while supporting charitable causes.

Dragon Boat Racing, a sport steeped in centuries-old tradition originating from China, will see teams competing in elaborately decorated canoes adorned with dragon heads and tails. The festival attracts participants from all walks of life, bringing together seasoned paddlers and novices alike for a day of exhilarating races and vibrant camaraderie.

According to organisers, the festival will feature six 40-foot dragon boats, each accommodating teams of 12 to 16 paddlers along with a drummer and helm. Teams will vie for victory in heats throughout the day, with the fastest advancing to the semi-finals and ultimately the grand finale.

Notably, the event is not just about competition but also about giving back to the community. Proceeds from the festival will support Penny Brohn UK, a Bristol-based charity dedicated to providing holistic cancer health and wellbeing support. The organisation offers personalized care to individuals affected by cancer, encompassing mind, body, and spirit.

With its vibrant atmosphere and enthusiastic spectators, the Dragon Boat Festival promises a day filled with excitement and entertainment. From colourful fancy dress to cheering crowds, the dockside will come alive as teams battle it out on the water.

Team captains have been provided with comprehensive instructions covering all aspects of racing and safety, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience for all participants. The event is open to individuals aged 16 and above, with no prior experience required, making it accessible to all who wish to take part.

As the countdown begins to the 2024 Dragon Boat Festival, anticipation is running high among participants and spectators alike. With the community coming together for a worthy cause, the event is poised to make a significant impact while celebrating two decades of spirited competition and charitable giving.
