President Bernd Leads Charity Breakfast Away Day at Penny Brohn UK

Today, President Bernd took fellow Rotarians on a special away day breakfast at Penny Brohn UK, the our headline charity for the year. The visit was part of a broader partnership with the charity, culminating in a forthcoming cheque presentation as a result of the Dragon Boat Festival  to support their work. Attendees were treated to a delicious breakfast followed by an enlightening talk by Head of Services, Nicky Robinson, who shared the charity’s impactful journey and its ongoing commitment to supporting people living with cancer.

After the talk, the group was invited to explore the charity’s stunning four-acre gardens, offering a tranquil environment that reflects Penny Brohn UK’s holistic approach to cancer care.

Penny Brohn UK’s story began in 1979 when founder Penny Brohn was diagnosed with breast cancer. A Bristol native, Penny recognised that she needed more than just medical treatment—she sought care for her mind, emotions, and spirit. Alongside her friend Pat Pilkington, Penny founded the Bristol Cancer Help Centre in 1983, which later became Penny Brohn UK. Their holistic approach, focusing on mental and emotional well-being, was innovative at the time and has since gained widespread acceptance.

In 1997, HRH the Prince of Wales became the charity’s patron, further enhancing its profile. Penny lived with cancer for 20 years until her passing in 1999, while Pat, awarded an MBE in 2003, remained involved until her death in 2013.

In 2007, thanks to support from Walk the Walk, Penny Brohn UK moved to a Grade II-listed building in Ham Green, Bristol, where its serene gardens offer a retreat for those seeking holistic cancer care.

The charity’s services continue to evolve, but its core mission remains the same: helping people live well with cancer by addressing all aspects of life—physical, emotional, and spiritual. Their evidence-backed approach emphasises personal control and resilience.

Bristol Breakfast Rotary Club are proud to support a charity that has made such a profound impact.
