Students Host Christmas Feast in Learning and Mentorship Programme at Bridge Learning Campus

A group of nine-special educational needs students at Bridge Learning Campus, mentored by volunteers from the Bristol Breakfast Rotary Club, showcased their newfound skills by organizing a Christmas feast for staff on December 16, 2024.

The initiative, guided by inspirational teacher Carly Berry, has been part of an ongoing Learning and Mentorship Programme this autumn term. Meeting weekly in the domestic science classroom, Rotarian mentors worked with students Chloe, Abbie, Lily, Rio, Wyatt, Kieron, Emmanuel, and Peter to plan and execute the event.

The project demanded a wide range of skills, from logistical planning and budgeting to food preparation and hygiene practices. The students took ownership of the entire process: choosing the menu, determining quantities, creating recipes, designing invitations, and even fundraising to cover costs.

On the day of the feast, the students prepared and served a delicious meal, including turkey rolls and festive puddings, to school staff, who greatly appreciated their efforts.

“This programme has been a tremendous learning experience for everyone involved,” said Carly Berry. “The students not only gained practical life skills but also grew in confidence and teamwork.”

The Rotary mentors also found the experience rewarding. “It’s been inspiring to see the students’ creativity and dedication,” said one Rotarian. “We’ve learned as much from them as they have from us.”

This year’s project reflects the broader goals of the mentorship programme: empowering students to take initiative, develop practical skills, and build strong community connections. The success of the Christmas feast is a testament to the students’ hard work and the power of collaboration.
