Welcome to our September newsletter 2026/27 Rotary year

President's Note

September has been a fairly quiet month with many people away on their late summer break.  The weather has remained warm to hot which has meant more outdoor activities.

However, weather conditions elsewhere in the world, particularly in Nepal, have led to devastating floods, severe infrastructural damage and unfortunately, loss of life.

We maintain close contact with our friends in Nepal, particularly The Rotary Club of Pokhara Fishtail, through the projects we have been involved in over the years, and we have been following the situation closely.  We realised at an early stage how devastating the floods were and within a week had pledged £1,500 to assist in the relief and rebuilding efforts there.  Fundraising efforts are ongoing.

This is the latest communication we have received from Past District Governor Binod Koirala:

D1100 Nepal Floods update 14 September 2026

1 The current position

“The rescue operation is continued but very little possibility to find alive human. So far 1260 dead-bodies have been recovered. Still 5000+ people are missing. About 4000 survivals are kept in holding centers for temporary shelter. The relief operation is continued. From the government and through NGOs in the area where road connections exist, are getting relief materials easily. In the norther part of the affected area, only helicopters are taking relief materials including food and non-food items. Different Rotary clubs and from district we have been supporting relief materials where mostly gaps on the supply are noticed (food/non-food, dead body bags) exist.

Since, most of the communities in the riverside of Bhotekoshi/Trishuli swept away, they have nothing, even land for reconstruction at the same place. We have been desperately waiting for next strategy of the government and to find areas, where Rotary can be fitted in specially to rehab human resources and reconstruction of the damages.

I am much looking on educational support to the children/youths and livelihood support to affected families. Let's see how the things go in coming days!

As DRFC, I have applied 2 disaster response grants to the Rotary Foundation each of $25K and already got approval.

The Rotary Club of Bristol Breakfast has launched its own appeal for funds to support the reconstruction process going forward and the details can be found later in this bulletin.

Boules

Our intrepid team of Boulers played three games in this year's league with mixed results, 1 loss, 1 win and 1 draw.  We were unable to proceed to the district payoffs, but it was our most successful result to date.

Bath & NE Somerset Keynsham Recycling Centre – site visit 16th September

Glenn Lodder, the Operations Manager at Bath & North-East Somerset, showed a group of Bristol Breakfast Rotarians around the Council’s Keynsham Waste and Recycling facility, which processes 60,000-tonnes of waste from households each year.

The site opened in 2024, is a brand new, state-of-the-art £37-million environmental hub and is spread across 10-acres. Up to 63% of all the waste that comes into the site gets recycled. Their state-of-the-art equipment uses magnets to collect metal (cans) and separates (by blowing) plastics. The rest, the general waste, goes to an energy from waste plant generating electricity to go back into the National Grid.

The Reuse Shop, which has successfully diverted 97 tonnes of household goods straight back into the local circular economy, sells everything that is too good for waste so that anyone can go in and buy. There is everything from cutlery to skis!

The Fleet workshop services not only their own fleet, but offers an MOT service to the general public as well., Their Salt Barn keeps the salt dry for clearing roads when necessary.

 The Reuse Shop

Sue enjoyed the visit saying that the most noticeable thing was that absolutely everything we consider as rubbish is turned into something that has a value – even garbage!

Mike said that the roadside trucks were more complicated than he imagined.

Caroline was surprised by how efficient the process was and the element of reuse and found it a very positive experience. She said it was really good to see so much of our waste being productively recycled!

Roger was impressed with the scale of the operation and hadn’t really thought about the different ways that waste is being reused or recycled.  He said it was very thought provoking.

Rob and Sally said it was a great trip.  Fantastic example of a circular economy and good use of taxpayer’s money.

There might be some visits back to the Reuse Shop in opening hours!
