You are receiving this newsletter as you are a friend or connection of Bristol Breakfast Rotary Club, or have been in the past. It is our desire to keep you informed of the work we do and to re-connect with you where common good can be achieved and we can continue to make a positive impact in the City of Bristol and beyond.
It is possible you may receive more than one copy of this newsletter if you have been included in more than one of our lists, in which case, we apologise and please do feel free to let us know.
Welcome to our August newsletter of Rotary Year 2025/26
President's Note
August is historically a quiet month, with schools being off for the summer and many of our members taking holidays with their families, so perhaps a shorter news update than usual this month and more of a 'social' theme!
That said, we always have a few things that we are working on behind the scenes and we know that from next month, things are going to become busy!
Please do feel free to contact me directly or to get in touch with any of our members, who can tell you more about the club, the benefits of being a member, the opportunities that await you as a member of Rotary International, and let's not forget the fun and friendship that comes along with it!
A 'Brai' Fundraiser!
Hailing from South Africa, what better way for our members Sue & Willem Pietersen to raise funds for the Carel du Toit Centre in Cape Town, than to host a wonderful South African barbecue, otherwise known as a 'Brai'.
The Carel du Toit Centre are instrumental in facilitating the early intervention of hearing loss in children and infants and Sue & Willem have a long association with them.
Willem's cooking skills are legendary in our club, so he’s always the best person when it comes to catering! He never lets us down when we are out and about on events such as our annual Dragonboat Festival, keeping us going with bacon rolls, burgers and the occasional glass of wine!
The Brai saw members and guests alike congregate at Sue and Willem's home on a sunny Sunday at the end of July and the funds raised go a long way to the £5000 target they need to support . There's nothing quite like combining fun and fundraising!
If you’d like to take a closer look at the project and perhaps make a small donation, the link is here.
Elaine has come to a decision about her President's Challenge! Whilst looking for some kind of physical challenge that wouldn't take too much out of her, being Elaine, she has failed in this quest and has decided instead to undertake the '3 PEAKS CHALLENGE' in May of 2026!
The 3 Peaks Challenge is a journey around the UK, during which ascents are made to the summits of the 3 largest mountains in the country, first being Ben Nevis, followed by Scafel Peak and finally Snowdon.
For the sake of her sanity and the fact she isn't as young as she used to be, she will undertake this over three days and not the often advertised 24 hours, thinking that she's less likely to quit across 3 days than halfway up a mountain in the middle of the night! To say Elaine doesn't like climbing hills is something of an understatement.....
Stay tuned for updates as she practices climbing up hills over the coming months and as we commence our fundraising to raise funds for the Club.
September Fellowship
Visit From Rotary Club of Prague International
We are very much looking forward to our friends at the Rotary Club of Prague International visiting us at the beginning of September and we have a full programme of events planned for them.
One of our extremely active members, Mary Whittington, has worked hard putting together a full programme of events and we're grateful to Mary for her efforts, as well as to some of our members who have given their time to help organise the events, and offer their own homes for some of the gatherings. We certainly all pull together at Rotary!
From Thursday 4th September our guests will enjoy a warm Rotary welcome and dinner, before embarking upon a full day on Friday, to include a tour of Bristol Beacon, lunch, a visit to Lifeskills at the Create Centre and then a fun evening at our Rotary skittles match!
Saturday will see them undertake a tour of St. Mary Redcliffe, before lunch and a guided walk of Bristol, with the visit ending with a bit of a get together to celebrate the visit!
Connecting with other clubs and sharing time is so important for the work of Rotary as, apart from the social aspect of it, it creates a fantastic opportunity to find out about the work of other clubs, share ideas and look at possible ways to work together on collaborative initiatives.
Rotary Social Time
Staying on the fellowship theme, something that is very close to our heart is that of the friendship and social aspect of our club that allows our members to get out and about to engage with each other and enjoy fun and learning away from the usual club activities.
We feel this is an immensely important and often undervalued area of what we do and another of the benefits of being a Rotarian.
We have busy lives and family commitments and our social committee's organisation of some extra-curricular activities allows some relaxation and sometimes affords the company to do the things that we may not otherwise do alone.
Long standing member Mike Blott is the one who is responsible for coming up with the ideas and he's never short of them! We've been to visit some of the charities that we have invited to speak at our club, we've toured long forgotten areas of Bristol to whet our historical appetites and we've been on long beach walks with lovely pubs at the end of it to relax and recover!
Keep up the good work Mike, the club loves our adventures!
Thank You!
Thank you for reading our August newsletter. We will share with you news of past events as well as current and forthcoming initiatives as we go through the year. Please let us know if you have an ideas, would like more information or to take part in anything we do.
Our Club Events are shown on the right of the page, so please do get in touch if you would like to attend one of our meetings as a guest, we'd be very happy to have you!
Until Next Month.......
